Hina and Moko Fulufulu

The Story of Hina and Moka Fulufulu
(Written by Falani of Lakepa)

Summary: In this story, the mother took revenge on the man who hurt her daughter.

Hina lived in the Second Heaven with two beautiful daughters. One day she sent down the two girls to the First Heaven to ask for fire from Moko Fulufulu. But Moko Fulufulu was a very difficult man. He mistreated the eldest girl. After this the girls asked for the fire so that they may return home before it became dark.

Moko Fulufulu did not want the girls to go home yet. He tried to find something for them to do to delay the departure.

“Take the insects from my head,” he commanded. The elder sister removed the insects, while the younger sister tied his hair to a post.

Both girls rushed forward, seized the fire and fed to the upper heaven.
Moko Fulufulu tried to rise but his hair was firmly tied.

When the sisters arrived back, their mother asked, “Why are you so late?”

“O, we have disobeyed you, we are like the cat and the Veka.”
Hina made a plan for Moko Fulufulu to come up to marry her daughter and a rope was let down for him to come up. When Moko Fulufulu finally arrived, he said, “Oi ! This is the first chance that I have had to come up and live here.”

But Hina fetched an axe and cut the rope. Moko Fulufulu had no chance to set foot on
The land. He fell down and hit his head on the rocks bruising it so badly that he died.
